Murray Islands
Murray Islands: Waier in foreground, Murray (Mer, home of the late Eddie Mabo) beyond. The Murray Islands, very recent volcanic vents (less than a million years old), were inundated by the rising sea that ushered in the current interglacial episode 8000 to 10 000 years ago. The eastern side of the Waier volcano eventually collapsed allowing the sea to flood into the crater. The inhabitants were once infamous for headhunting. Eyre Creek
Eyre Creek, draining water from the northern end of the Great Dividing Range into Lake Machattie, an ancient sump once lying at the base of an inland sea. Its course is rigidly controlled by prevailing winds as it is tightly constrained between long parallel dunes of the north-eastern Simpson Desert. From the air many overflow channels can be seen, hence the term Channel Country. Simpson Desert, Queensland, Australia
