Yareta (Azorella compacta)

Yareta (Azorella compacta), evergreen plant native to South America at high altitudes. It forms dense mats that reduce heat loss, close to the ground where the temperature is slightly higher. It grows only about 1.5 cm a year and is a traditional fuel but its slow growth rate makes harvesting non-sustainable. Atacama Desert, Antofagasta Province, Chile
