Gypsum sand dunes and plants that can grow fast enough to avoid burial by the shifting sands

Gypsum sand dunes and plants that can grow fast enough to avoid burial by the shifting sands. Gypsum sand is rare since gypsum is water soluble and rain would carry it to the sea. But the San Andres (in distance) and Sacramento Mountains surround this area so rainwater washed into it remains, eventually drying and leaving gypsum crystals known as selenite. Afar salt miner preparing salt blocks at Lake Assal

Afar salt miner preparing salt blocks at Lake Assal. Except during the heat of summer, Afar tribesmen make the 100 km round trip with camel caravans to the salt lakes. Blocks of salt are cut from the lake crust and loaded onto camels. Almost all of Ethiopia's salt production comes from Lake Assal. Danakil Depression, Afar Region, Ethiopia

Wild horses (Equus caballus) Featured Image

Wild horses (Equus caballus)

Wild horses (Equus caballus), two horses of a population living on the harsh plains of the eastern fringe of the Namib Desert. The herd of 90 to 150 may be descendants of cavalry used in World War I, or riding horses freed or escaped from farms a century ago. They are generally in good condition except in times of severe drought. Near Aus, southern Namibia
