Former open-cut tin mine on Mount Bischoff. 110 years after its heyday as one of the world's richest tin mines. Tin was found in 1871 and was at first extracted by sluicing. Surface mining went on until 1929, was restarted in 1942 and closed in 1947. Waratah, Tasmania, Australia

These regeneration burns send massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide, significantly contributing to global warming, but every autumn the procedure has the State government's approval and more and more burns occur each year, covering the state in smoke haze.
