Fossil thigh bone and gizzard stones of a Thunderbird

Fossil thigh bone and gizzard stones of a Thunderbird. Thunderbirds roamed most of Australia for almost 30 million years and died out less than 26 000 years ago. Some species grew over 3 m tall, probably the largest birds of all time. Beside the massive leg bone are the gizzard stones swallowed by the bird to help it grind up the coarse vegetation of its main diet. Riversleigh Section, Boodjamulla National Park, northwest, Queensland, Australia
