The Pinnacles Desert
The Pinnacles Desert, limestone monoliths. No one knows just how the limestone pillars were formed, or why they have formed only here and a few other places. Certainly they came from deep down in sand formed of broken-down shells that was cemented by rain into limestone. Fire possibly removed the vegetation that had held the surface together, so that wind gradually uncovered the pillars. Nambung National Park, Western Australia
