Joffre Gorge

Joffre Gorge. The ironstone from which this gorge was carved by water was deposited when bacterial oxygen was released into iron- laden seas between 2.5 and 2.3 billion years ago. The soluble ferrous iron became insoluble ferric iron and fell to the seabed as clouds of rust. When the accumulating oxygen had saturated the seas it leaked into the atmosphere. This event altered the course of evolution. Karijini National Park, Western Australia
