The phenomenon occurs during winter when winds in the sea north of Japan can reach 13 metres per second and the waves about 4 metres high. Botanical plankton in the water turn into foam, white at the start of winter turning to yellowish as particles of rock are added to the mix. Shiretoko National Park, Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan
