Pompey Complex, reef and new sandy cay in formation. These reefs are the largest and most complex in the entire Great Barrier Reef, extending over 140 km. Many of the reefs are between 50 and 100 sq km. Narrow channels in the Pompey reefs over 100 m deep are scoured by strong tidal currents.
