A few of several hundred sandstone balls on the escarpment face or on the plateau of a small hill called Serre d'Autruy
A few of several hundred sandstone balls on the escarpment face or on the plateau of a small hill called Serre d'Autruy. They are perfectly spherical or ovoid with diameters of at least 50 cm, the larger ones approaching two metres. The hill was under seawater in the Lower Cretaceous 110 million years ago, composed of fine muds and silts that were covered by a submarine avalanche of coarser sand. The sandstone balls resulted from lithification of the sand avalanche. Saint Andre de Rosans, Massif des Baronnies, Hautes Alpes, France
